Permanent Waves (“Perms”) and Body Waves

Perms are an ideal solution for adding body to fine, limp hair. It can provide loose, sexy waves or tight, corkscrew curls. It also has the ability to be applied to curly or wavy hair for straightening, especially if you’re not seeking the higher degree of straightening from keratin smoothing treatments. The key difference between a perm and a body wave is the size of the tools used in wrapping the hair. I use different strengths of formulas and different rod sizes to achieve the desired effect. The key advantage of a body wave (especially in long hair) isn’t so much to get curls but to improve the “body” of the hair, allowing it to better hold various styles. These services generally take 1-2 hours, depending upon the length of your hair. I apply a single chemical solution to break the structural bonds in your hair and then apply a neutralizer. It’s also important to keep in mind that a perm takes a day to relax and that the thicker your hair, the better the perm will take. Most perms generally last about 4-6 months – it doesn’t wash out, but rather grows out over time. My preferred product is Goldwell, a leader in the industry for over 50 years. Goldwell products are enriched with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) which are derived from fruits, help seal in moisture, and smooth the hair cuticle, leaving the hair better able to reflect light and allow increased shine. Goldwell’s FortiCurl Complex also forms a protective layer on the hair, reinforcing areas that are fragile. The hair structure is smoother, resulting in defined curls with a minimum of color loss on color treated hair.
